Last week, we talked about how I explain Dwarves with Swords to new players - a group building strategic combat board game. It turns out that my pitch is not quite as easy to understand as I thought, so I’m getting into detail about the two main components. This week, we’re going to tackle the second half of my description - strategic combat.

Strategic combat is exactly like it sounds. You strategize and make a plan, watch what your enemies are doing, and then adjust the plan accordingly (strategically) to make sure when you do combat, you come out ahead.

The actual game of Dwarves with Swords starts here. Once you’ve built your Army, it’s time to put them to the test against other Armies. There are a ton of different strategies you can t...

I was recently reading an article on The Art of Boardgaming that talks about board game terminology. Joseph throws out a few terms and describes them as a small part of a gamer’s lexicon, and how it can be confusing for someone new to games, or even new to a style of games. It was an interesting read, but I didn’t really think much of it, especially when it comes to Dwarves with Swords (‘cause it’s an easy game!).

Around the same time, Earle asked me what my one line pitch is for Dwarves with Swords. I told him that I typically describe it as “a group building strategic combat game”. I started to insist how this is an easy way to explain the game when I remembered the article from The Art of Boardgaming. Holy moly, I’m assuming an ...

I ordered a second round of prototypes in the last few days, and they were released for production last night. I had to order the miniatures from a separate place from the rest of the game, but this will really give us something solid to show off in demo sessions. The minis will all come in a single color, so if anyone knows a good mini painter in Denver, let me know! The best my art skills will come is a rattle can of matte black.

On top of getting more stuff to play with, we’ve been bouncing around the idea of showing the new stuff off via a livestream. The general idea is that these live games could be available to both introduce new players to the mechanics and how the game runs, as well as providing accessibility to people who aren’t ...

I made a comment on Instagram and Facebook the other day that last week was a little tough. Canceling the Kickstarter definitely left me in a bit of a funk, and I found myself at a loss for what to do next, despite knowing where I wanted to end up. It was a little frustrating.

But then came Saturday. In the same social media post, I described Saturday as a day where we recharged our Dwarves with Swords batteries, and that definitely happened. We left our house at 8:30am and didn’t get home until nearly midnight. I’m generally the kind of person that likes to be tucked into bed by 9:00pm the latest, or I need copious amounts of coffee to keep me going. Saturday, that was not the case. I was riding high on the good feels from the gaming comm...

It's been quite a while since I’ve written something instead of being a talking head (and beard) - time to knock the rust off!

Over the last couple months, I’ve transitioned from being the “game designer” of MADMEN Games to being the “sales/marketing/finance/logistics grunt”. I've learned more than I knew existed regarding Kickstarter marketing and promotion (via Courtney’s research!), and I’m starting to understand - finally - that realistically running a game design and publishing company is much more than I bargained for a year ago. Especially while I still have a “day job”.

Having said all that, I am still incredibly happy and satisfied with how Dwarves with Swords is going, in spite of the Kickstarter hiccup. We've got a great plan f...
